DESCRIPTION: Illustrated by Michael Foreman. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, stage, opera, and other media. The atmospheric black-and-white illustrations of Michael Foreman evoke both the ghostly nature and the sprightly humour of this classic story. But Dickens’s main intention was, in his own words, to create a ‘kind of whimsical masque which the good-humour of the season justified, to awaken some loving and forbearing thoughts ’. This is Dickens in miniature, containing all the pathos, wonder and imagination of his longer novels, as well as the best-loved hallmarks of the ghost-story tradition: clanging chains, hooded figures and creeping terror. This classic Christmas story is now synonymous with the holiday itself. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales. The book was written and published in early Victorian era Britain when it was experiencing a nostalgic interest in its forgotten Christmas traditions, and at the time when new customs such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were being introduced. It summons a delightful vision of a Victorian Christmas, with its plum-puddings and skating, but most importantly it still radiates a message of benevolence and generosity. The story of the flint-hearted old miser Scrooge, who mends his ways after visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, caught the world’s imagination when it was first published in 1843.
